Water and Sewer Permits

All Water & Sewer permit applications must be applied for in person at the Public Works/Engineering Office Counter.  These permit applications can only be generated by computer at the time of the visit.

Procedures for Obtaining Water & Sewer Permits for a NEW House/Building

  • Submit in 3 Copies of the Proposed Site Plan showing all grading, utilities, and basement elevation of the building, if any, for review.  Include one original Grading Permit, if there is a basement in the structure: completed, signed and stamped by a Professional Engineer. (At the end of the process two Town Stamped copies will be returned; one for the applicant and one for the Building Dept.)

  • In the meantime, the applicant may start the application process by conveying the owner, address, type of work and licensed utility contractor information to our Engineering Staff so the information may be entered into the computer. (If you do not know who the licensed utility contractor will be; or the contractor has not obtained a license yet, we cannot process the application portion of the permit until that task is complete.)

  • If all of the information for the application has been provided, then Engineering Staff will print out the application form(s).  The applicant can take the form to obtain all of the pertinent signatures, to review it for content, and to prepare a check to pay fees that apply.

  • Engineering Staff will review the plans within a minimum of 48 hours for plans less than 10 sheets in the set; otherwise the review will take a minimum of 72 hours for more than 10 sheets in the set.

  • As long as the plans submitted need no revisions, signatures of the owner and licensed contractor have been obtained on the application sheet and fees for the application have been presented and recorded, Engineering Staff may then proceed to issue the permits required.

  • Please note that Water and Sewer permits are two separate permits, requiring two separate applications and approvals.  The check for fees for all permits may be written all on one check made payable to the "Town of Canton".
