Canton Public Library Announces Opening of Temporary Facility at Draper Brothers Monday July 29th at 1:00 PM

CANTON- The Trustees of the Canton Public Library are pleased to announce the opening of the temporary library annex at Draper Brothers. The Draper Annex will open on Monday, July 29th at 1:00 PM. The temporary facility was chosen after a yearlong search of locations that could accommodate the collection of more than 100,000 items. The Draper facility is close to all major routes and is easily accessible. "This building is very comfortable, well lit and should provide us with a great temporary home" said Mark Lague, Library Director.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Betty Chelmow, said that "the Draper Bros. Building should serve the town well over the next year," adding that she hoped that people would not like the temporary facility too much. As demolition and construction begins at the library site, the temporary home will serve all of Canton's needs.

Over the past several weeks many residents have been using the services of surrounding communities libraries. "One of the great things that has been happening is that people have been coming into the temporary building attempting to get services while we have been closed," said Lague. The patrons cannot wait to visit the temporary home.

The entire staff has worked over the last month to move and reorganize the collection, catalog new materials and make the space functional as a library. Waiting patiently on the shelves are hundreds of new books and materials purchased over the last several weeks. The opening day will include refreshments and tours. The Library is located on Draper Lane. Draper Lane is off Washington St. between the intersections of Dedham St. and Chapman St. about one mile east of the permanent Library building. Library hours of service (beginning July 29, 2002) are Monday: 1:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday: 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

The whole community has financially supported this project and several community boards and organizations have publicly endorsed the new building. The Board of Trustees look forward to demonstrating and sharing the activities of this public project to the town. This new facility is destined to become a new Canton landmark.
