FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CANTON PUBLIC LIBRARY RECEIVES $2.6 MILLION FROM THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS.

The timing could not have been better for the Library Trustees to hold the Topping Off Ceremony at the Library construction site this Saturday. On Thursday, Governor Swift signed State Capital Budget that included the much anticipated funding for the Library Construction Grant. The Library had been fourth on the waiting list to receive its $2.6M grant announced last year but will be the first of eighteen projects across the state to benefit from the release of funds as a result of its construction progress. The competitive grant was awarded based on applications that included needs assessment, planning, suitability, exterior and interior design, and serviceability. The awards took into account the rating of these criteria by independent reviewers, distribution of projects by community size and economic hardship. The Trustees have lobbied over the past several months to encourage the legislature to enact the capital budget which would release the money. The announcement drew a hearty cheer from the crowd of more than one hundred area residents.

The Topping Off ceremony celebrated the completion of the steel structural phase of the project. At the same time the event was an opportunity for the community to sign the last steel girder before it is attached to the building, and to get an inside view of the Library construction that is now more than 25% complete. A tree and flag were raised upon the new frame of the building. For more information, please visit the Canton Public Library Website at: town.canton.ma.us/library
