& expansion project. Did you know that...
- The
library was donated to the Town of Canton in 1902 by Augustus &
Harriet Hemenway.
- In
1902 there were only about 5000 people living in Canton.
- The
library was expanded in 1962 at a cost of $261,000. This addition added
the two side wings and the rear portion of the building.
- In
1962 there were 12,771 people living in Canton.
- Air
conditioning was added in 1994.
- There
are over 90,000 items in the library collection.
- There
are more than 12,000 patrons, representing more than 60% of Canton's
population.
- 27%
of patrons were born in the 1980's
- 18%
of patrons were born in the 1950's
- An
average of 527 patrons visit the library per day.
- Before
the renovation began, there were 9204 linear feet of bookshelves in
the library. After the renovating is completed there will be more than
15,000 linear feet of bookshelves.

1997 the Town of Canton began the preliminary design process by approving
$40,000 for study and architectural plans.
- In
1998 the Town of Canton approved the submission of a State Grant Application
for partial funding of the building project.
- In
2000 the Town of Canton approved a Proposition 2 1/2 overide clearing
the way for the project.
- 1414
people voted in favor of the Prop. 2 1/2 overide.
- In
2002 the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners placed Canton
4th on the list for $2.6 million in funding.
- Before
the renovation there were 17,053 square feet in the library.
- There
will be almost 34,000 square feet in the expanded library.
