The construction and historic renovation is slated to be completed in the winter of 2003-2004. The construction schedule is estimated to take between 12 and 18 months.


The study phase of this project was completed in 1998. The design began in August 2000. Final approval was given by Annual Town Meeting in May, 2002. Construction began on June 24, 2002.


This is a team with tremendous talents. The architectural firm has designed over twenty libraries and has completed dozens of publicly funded projects. The architects for the current project are Richard Smith as project architect and Frank Adams as library planner. Ed Bourget is the project manager and Jennifer Miller is the director of interior design. The architectural firm for the project is Burt Hill Kosar Rittelman Associates.


The construction firm of BBC Company Inc. of Rockland, MA is building the new Canton Public Library.


This is a publicly funded project supplemented by private grants and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. The bulk of the funding comes from the taxpayers of Canton in the form of a debt exclusion passed in 2001. Additional funding of almost $2.6 million comes from a grant administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Canton is number four on a list of 41 cities and towns awaiting funding. Thanks to hundreds of donations the Canton Library has raised almost $400,000 in private and corporate donations.


Temporary library facilities are located at Draper Lane (off Washington Street) Draper Mills has a long and celebrated history in Canton and was founded in 1856. This temporary library facility opened on July 26, 2002.
