Visiting

The Animal Control Department encourages visitors to our shelter. We can answer questions regarding:

  • Adoption
  • Animal Regulations
  • Behavior
  • Care
  • Conflicts with Wildlife

Normal business hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, however, this does not mean the Officer is always physically at the shelter during those hours. The officer may be out on patrol or transporting an animal to/from the vet. If you’re interested in coming in to see our adoptable animals or to speak to the Animal Control Officer it is best to call first.

License Information

2023 dog licenses are now available! Licenses are issued by the Town Clerk at the Town Hall. To obtain a license, proof of up to date rabies vaccination must be shown. License fees are $15 for dogs that have been spayed / neutered, $20 for dogs that have not been spayed / neutered. All dogs 6 months or older are required to be licensed. Dog licenses expire on April 1st and licenses are available for renewal on January 1st each year.  For more information please contact the Town Clerk’s office at (781)821-5013.

Important Note

Per Mass General Law and Town of Canton by-laws there is a $50 fine for failure to license a dog. Please license your dog in a timely manner to avoid these extra fees. If you have any questions you can call our office at (781)575-6507 or the Town Clerk’s office at (781)821-5013.

Lost / Found Dogs

If we find a dog and it is wearing a license tag we will notify the owner as soon as possible. It is our goal to get every lost animal back to his/her family quickly and safely. If your dog is missing please call us at 781-575-6507 as soon as possible.

If we find an animal and we are unable to locate the owner, or the owner does not claim it in 10 days, the dog/cat will make a trip to the vet and then become available for adoption. Found dogs are posted on our facebook page.
