Treasurer / Collector


Responsibilities

The Division of Treasury Management / Collections is headed by a Town Treasurer / Collector, appointed by the Director of Finance, subject to the approval of the Select Board. The Town Treasurer / Collector is responsible for the following general duties:

  • Acquire rate bids to ensure beneficial borrowing rates
  • Balance all monthly receipts with bank statements
  • Collect and deposit all tax title payments
  • Invest all town funds
  • Provide reconciliation services on all bank accounts

In addition, the Town Treasurer / Collector shall have all other powers and authority which are given by general law to Town Treasurers and Town Collectors. Learn more on the Finance Department page.

Exact Bill Payments

The fastest and easiest way to make payments is by using our lockbox. Payments made through the lockbox must be for the exact amount of the bill being paid, and should not include correspondence of any kind. Simply place payments in the return envelope enclosed with your bill, addressed to:

Due Dates

Canton is on a quarterly billing cycle for real estate and personal property taxes. The due dates are:

  • Payment 1 - August 1st
  • Payment 2 - November 1st
  • Payment 3 - February 1st
  • Payment 4 - May 1st

Fees

Municipal Lien Certificates

  • $50 for a Residential Certificate
  • $100 for a Commercial Certificate

Demands & Warrants

  • $10 for an Excise / Real Estate / Personal Property Demand
  • $10 for an Excise Warrant

Other Fees

  • $20 for an Excise Registry Marked Fee
  • $29 for a Deputy Collector Fee
