Water and Sewer Permits

All Water and Sewer permit applications may be applied for online.  If you are not able to apply online, you may apply in person at the Public Works/Engineering Office Counter. These permit applications can only be generated by computer at the time of the visit. To determine how much your project may cost in Public Works fees, please feel free to print out the Water and Sewer Application Worksheet  (PDF) form. If applying in person, please fill the worksheet out as best you can, prior to arriving at the Engineering Office.

Water & Sewer Permits for a New House/Building

  • Upload the plans online when filling out the online permit application or submit 3 Copies of the Proposed Site Plan. The site plan should show all grading, utilities, and basement & garage elevations of the building, if any, for review. Deliver or upload one original Grading Permit if there is a basement proposed in the new building; completed, signed and stamped by a Professional Engineer.
Note: At the end of the process two Town Stamped copies will be returned; one for the applicant and one for the Building Department
  • In the meantime, the applicant may start the application process by conveying the owner, address, type of work and licensed utility contractor information to our Engineering Staff so the information may be entered into the computer.
Note: If you do not know who the licensed utility contractor will be; or the contractor has not obtained a license yet, we cannot process the application portion of the permit until that task is complete.
  • If all of the information for the application has been provided, then Engineering Staff will print out the application form(s). The applicant can take the form to obtain all of the pertinent signatures, to review it for content, and to prepare a check to pay fees that apply.
  • Engineering Staff will review the plans within 2 to 4 days.  Turn-around time may be longer depending on whether edits from the Design Engineer are necessary.
  • As long as the plans submitted need no revisions, signatures of the owner and licensed contractor have been obtained on the application sheet and fees for the application have been presented and recorded, Engineering Staff may then proceed to issue the permits required.
  • Please note that Water and Sewer permits are two separate permits, requiring two separate applications and approvals. The check for fees for all permits may be written all on one check made payable to the "Town of Canton."
