2020 Local Town Election

Election Date

In response to the State of Emergency and concerns about COVID-19 and its implications on election administration, the Governor signed a law authorizing the Board of Selectmen to vote to postpone the local election which was scheduled for April 7, 2020.  A copy of the law may be viewed here.  At its meeting on March 31, 2020, the Board of Selectmen voted to reschedule the election to June 16, 2020.  John Connolly made a motion, seconded by Michael Loughran that, in accordance with Section 1 of Chapter 45 of the Acts of 2020, the Town of Canton postpone the Town election scheduled for April 7, 2020 to June 16, 2020.  Roll call vote:  John Connolly – yes; Michael Loughran – yes;  Mark Porter – yes; Chris Connolly – abstained; Thomas Theodore – abstained.  Motion approved 3-0-2.

 Any incumbent official whose term would have expired on April 7, 2020 will remain in their position until the election is held and a successor is elected and sworn in.

The law establishes a new voter registration deadline of 8:00pm on the 10th day before the rescheduled election.  The voter registration deadline is Friday, June 5, 2020.

The law authorizes the Town to use ballots originally prepared for the April 7th election.  A sample of the Town Election ballot may be viewed here.

The law provides two alternative to voting in person on election day:

              First, the law allows any person taking precaution related to COVID-19 to vote by absentee ballot.  Applications for an absentee ballot must be received by the Town Clerk by noon on Monday, June 15, 2020.  An absentee ballot application is available here.  Absentee ballots must be returned to the Town Clerk’s Office by 8:00 pm on election day, June 16, 2020.

              Second, the law provides for early voting by mail.  Applications for early voting ballots must be received by the town Clerk by noon on Monday, June 15, 2020.  Any voter may obtain an early voting ballot.  An early voting application is available here.  Early voting ballots must be returned to the Town Clerk’s Office by 8:00 pm on election day, June 16, 2020.
