April 26, 2023 Select Board Statement
Over the past several days, we have received inquiries concerning news reports and social media posts related to the ongoing criminal case dealing with the death of John O’Keefe. The investigation into the matter was referred to the Massachusetts State Police and Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office immediately after the incident. The Town and its employees have cooperated fully in the investigation. It is our understanding that the next court proceeding will take place on May 3rd, at which time more information may be forthcoming. We reserve all judgment while the judicial process moves forward. At this time, it is inappropriate for the Town to make any further comment on this on-going investigation.
Canton Electricity Choice Program
On March 24, 2023, the Town of Canton submitted its Energy Aggregation Plan to the MA Department of Public Utilities (MA DPU) for approval. Since then, Canton participated in the MA DPU Public Hearing on May 16, 2023 where committee members, town administration, residents, and our energy advisor spoke in favor of the filing.
The MA DPU review period for municipal electricity aggregation programs has recently been lasting between 12-24 months. However, there is current legislation (i.e., Bill H.4266) under review by the MA Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy which includes language that establishes a 90-day deadline for the MA DPU to approve or reject a plan or revised plan.
